Firstly I want to start out this blog post with an apology. I have been very busy lately with school and never had the chance to update the blog. I really thought I’d have something up on what I wanted to talk about sooner than I am actually talking about. So let’s get to it!

As promised from my last blog post, today I want to stress on the point of how important it is to get backlinks to your website. But first, briefly I want to let the beginners know that whoever has searched about Search Engine Optimization, they’ve definately come across the term backlinks or inbound links.

So what is a Backlink?

  • A backlink is a link from any website that has a link straight to your website. It is that simple. This is how serach engines determine the quality and importance of your website. The more backlinks you have directing your website, the more important the search engines think your website is. You can view it as a network of referrals. For example, your a self-employed carpenter running your business. Your customers are the “search engines.” One customer is looking for a carpenter to do some repair jobs for him in the house. He remembers that his neighbor hired a carpenter last month to fix something. So he asks his neighbor if he knows any carpenters that can do the job he wants the carpenter to do. The neighbor, gives his neighbor the carpenter’s number that did the job for him last month. If you see it in these simplistic terms, in that case, the neighbor served a backlink for the carpenter. It showed his neighbor (the intended search engines in this case) who wants to hire a carpenter his importance of doing the job. However, in search engine optimization, it isn’t just that simple but that’s the idea. In SEO, the search engines say “okay, so we have a website with a lot of backlinks, it must be important, but are these backlinks quality backlinks?” That’s the question the search engine would ask themselves.

So what is a Quality Backlink?

  • A quality backlink is a backlink from a high pagerank website. When search engines see that a website has many inbound links or backlinks, they see if the links that are coming to a website of high quality. They determine this by seeing if the website that is bringing the link of a website the search engines is looking at has quality links itself and what importance of that website as well. This is how search engines determine how to rank specific website when you search for something on Google, Yahoo, or MSN.

If we went on and on to talk about the importance of backlinks to a website, someone can write a whole book on how important it is for websites. However, for the purposes of this blog post, since it is mainly targeted for beginners, I want to give you a jist of the importance of backlinks and how to understand it in the most simple way.
